Kuehne Company uses Manufacturing Byproduct for Downstream Benefit

Jun 11, 2021 | Announcements | 0 comments

One of the byproducts that is created by Kuehne Company’s bleach manufacturing process is hydrogen gas. In an ongoing effort to reduce waste and increase sustainability, Kuehne Company has engineered a system to capture and reuse the hydrogen gas byproduct as fuel for its boilers. Generation of steam off the boilers using the hydrogen gas has evolved into multiple downstream benefits.

Using Hydrogen Gas to Reduce Carbon Footprint

In 2016, Kuehne Company completed the construction of its new Brine-to-Bleach facility in Kearny, New Jersey. One top priority of constructing this new facility was to enclose it to protect employees from the harsh winter elements typical of the Northeastern region of the United States.  The steam generated by the boilers is used to heat the building, keeping employees warm in the winter. It is also used to keep the emergency safety shower system water tepid, as is required by OSHA regulation. Kuehne meets and often exceeds all regulatory requirements and strives to keep employees safe and comfortable via innovative and inherently safer production technology. In case of an emergency, our employees know that they would never have to wash off in icy cold water.

Summers in the northeast can be hot, so as soon as the warmer weather arrives, the heaters are converted to circulate cooler air that keeps our employees comfortable.  Thanks to Kuehne engineer’s ability to implement a system that captures and converts the hydrogen gas to energy, Kuehne improves its carbon footprint by reducing its amount of natural gas use by around 40%. When the hydrogen gas is burned in the boiler, the products of combustion are much more environmentally friendly than that of the equivalent amount of natural gas.
